The European Sustainable Industry Barometer

11/10/2021

The first edition of the European Sustainable Industry Barometer, developed by CSR Europe in collaboration with Vigeo Eiris (part of Moody's ESG Solutions Group), was launched on October 11, 2021 at the European SDG Summit For Climate action and Just Transition

The Barometer provides data on the sustainability level and maturity of European industry sectors and federations, demonstrating the annual progress made by companies and industry federations on ESG and climate issues and where additional effort is needed.

The Barometer Complements the Annual Report on the EU progress on the SDGs released by Eurostat.

The European Sustainable Industry Barometer was developed in the framework of the European Pact for Sustainable Industry as its key benchmarking tool, in order to keep track of the progress made and facilitate the translation of a shared industry vision into a common roadmap.

The European Pact for Sustainable Industry was launched at the European SDG Summit 2020. It aims at scaling up the impact of individual efforts made by companies, industry federations, and EU leaders towards a Sustainable Europe 2030. Also to contribute to the post-pandemic recovery, making it a blueprint for a sustainable future.

The Pact envisage the creation of impactful partnerships between companies, industry federations, and policymakers to bridge the current EU economic silos, across borders and value-chains.

To achieve impact at scale, the Pact for Sustainable Industry sets out three different targets for each sector, namely:

  • Industry Federations: To have a mature Sustainability Industry Strategy for each industry federation by 2024.
  • Companies: To have 10.000 companies engaged in sectorial- and cross-sectorial collaborations by 2030.
  • EU Policymakers: To leverage the collaborative actions of companies and implement an inclusive level playing field by 2024

“The industry federations are uniquely positioned to accelerate change in their sectors. They can operate as both an educator and convener. They can accelerate the speed at which industries can learn and adopt more sustainable, transformative and collaborative practice….. The ‘Decade of Action’ is underway and for industry federations and their members, now is the time for increasing collaboration, communication and action” – said Stefan Crets, director of CSR Europe in the foreword to the European Sustainable Industry Barometer.
