GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) is the independent, international organization that provides the world’s most widely used standards for sustainability reporting – the GRI Standards, used by over 80% of the world’s largest companies.
In May 2022 GRI issued an updated version of the guidance: Linking the SDGs and the GRI Standards, which is now available for organizations of all sizes and sectors, as a free resource. The guide aims to help companies increase their focus to how they are contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), by using the GRI Standards, making it easier to measure, track, and communicate progress on the Global Goals. In particular, document shows how the disclosures within the GRI Standards can be used to report on specific SDGs and their targets.
Transparency is fast becoming the new paradigm for conducting business. Transparency underlies Target 12.6 of the SDGs, which requires action to encourage companies to adopt sustainable practices and integrate sustainability information into their reporting. Through better reporting, organizations can understand, communicate, and better manage their contributions to the SDGs.
“Since the adoption of the SDGs in 2016, GRI has played a lead role in enabling businesses to assess and report their impacts – and hence their contribution towards sustainable development. This new version of the linkage document adds to the reporting tools and guidance we provide, to help accelerate progress and drive bolder action on the SDGs. The GRI Standards are the only global standards that support disclosure against multiple targets of the Global Goals.”
Peter Paul Van de Wijs, GRI’s Chief External Affairs Officer
