Meta, Constellation ink 20-year nuclear power deal to support AI goals

Meta and energy company Constellation Energy have officially entered into a 20-year partnership. Under this agreement, Constellation will supply Meta with nuclear, zero-emission energy. This deal aims to meet the growing energy demands of Meta's artificial intelligence (AI) development and data centers.
The rapid progress of AI technologies and the expansion of AI-powered services lead to enormous energy consumption. Companies, including Meta, are seeking ways to meet these demands while simultaneously reducing carbon emissions.
As part of the partnership, Meta will receive 1,121 megawatts of nuclear energy from Constellation Energy's Clinton Clean Energy Center in Illinois starting in June 2027. This agreement will enable Constellation Energy to increase the Clinton plant's clean energy output by 30 megawatts.
The agreement also ensures the preservation of 1,100 local jobs and will generate $13.5 million in annual tax revenue for the region.
Meta's move is not an exception. Recently, other major tech companies, including Microsoft, Google, and Amazon, have actively pursued nuclear energy purchasing agreements. This underscores the fact that nuclear energy, as a stable and emission-free source, is increasingly being considered an integral part of future digital infrastructure.
When discussing nuclear energy, the safety of nuclear power plants is a separate issue. The main threats are associated with radioactive material leaks and accidental explosions, which can be triggered by human error as well as natural disasters.
However, despite past accidents and challenges in waste management, technological advancements and improved safety standards are making nuclear energy a more reliable and safer option. Moreover, more and more countries are considering it as a means to combat climate change.
