The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) has published its Sustainability Taxonomy, a digital framework that enables the conversion of GRI Standards into a digital format, simplifying the collection, analysis, and comparison of sustainability data.
GRI's new taxonomy is developed using the XBRL (eXtensible Business Reporting Language) format, a universally recognized format for digital reporting of financial and business information.
GRI Sustainability Taxonomy allows companies to submit sustainability reports in a standardized digital format. This increases the compatibility of GRI Standards with other reporting standards and facilitates the universal application of GRI Standards for sustainability reporting alongside any other standards.
The GRI Sustainability Taxonomy is maximally harmonized with the most widely used reporting standards, such as the "ISSB Standards" and the "European Sustainability Reporting Standards" (ESRS).
„GRI's Sustainability Taxonomy is a significant step forward in making sustainability information faster to retrieve and analyze, for both reporting organizations and data users. It is a practical, inclusive tool that helps ensure the GRI Standards remain world-leading and fit for purpose in an ever-evolving digital reporting world. Looking forward, the approach to create the Sustainability Taxonomy is shaping how we develop our Standards, bringing greater clarity and precision. - Cristina Gil White, GRI Chief Engagement Officer
GRI plans consistent steps to help organizations simplify the digital reporting process. This includes GRI Academy preparing training sessions for reporting organizations. By the end of 2025, GRI will also publish additional supporting software tools that companies can use to verify their digital reports' compliance with GRI Standards requirements.
