Information workshop: Public Policy Dimension of Corporate Responsibility – the Role of the government and public policy instruments to support CSR

Regardless of the voluntary nature of corporate social responsibility, currently, no one doubts about the role that the Governments should play in the promotion and development of CSR in their countries. Over the last years, governments of many Western developed countries have been actively carrying out CSR supportive policies - an alternative to strict regulations. Many countries have elaborated a common State policy and an action plan for promoting CSR; and various Governmental agencies, special Governmental committees, boards and other institutional structures have been created to manage and coordinate CSR issues.

Public sector actors in developing countries and countries of transitional economy are also increasingly confronted with issues related to Corporate Social Responsibility.

Alternative to strict regulations, there are many different policy instruments for Governments to stimulate and support CSR.

Similar to other countries, development of corporate social responsibility can bring many positive outcomes to Georgia and can play a crucial role in the accomplishment of National policy objectives.

The workshop is intended for representatives of Government agencies (local and Central Governments, respective Parliamentary Committees).

Workshop program addresses the following issues:

  • Corporate social responsibility as a self-regulatory tool, its legal and social-economic aspects
  • Potential roles of Governments in the CSR agenda – CSR and law
  • Range of policy instruments used by Governments to stimulate the development of CSR
  • Experience of EU states regarding the public sector initiatives in promoting CSR
  • CSR in developing/middle-income countries and the public policy framework
  • The relevance of public policy to support corporate social responsibility in Georgia – CSR’s role in the accomplishment of Sustainable Development National objectives, effective achievement of commitments assumed by Georgia under the Georgia-EU Association Agreement, and increasing of the country’s investment appeal and competitiveness, etc.
